Zakhele at Home
The Zakhele group work in the Nkomazi region in the province of Mpumalanga in South Africa. Their musical director Vusi Kubayi (a Director of Za Foundation and a senior management member of Thembalethu) and the team work closely with local schools in the area using drama to deliver important messages about HIV/AIDs, teenage pregnancy, drugs and alcohol abuse to school children.
This work is sorely needed as the area has one the highest HIV infection rates in the world currently estimated to be around 40%. Many people in the area turn to traditional healers for help rather than conventional medicine. The Zakhele group show young people that knowing their status is very important as is the role of conventional medicine.
Za currently funds the work of the Zakhele group in Nkomazi.

Zakhele in Review
“When I first met the African people I was nervous but excited because I had never sung with foreign people before. However, then I heard them sing; they were incredible! I had never in my life heard such powerful vocals, or seen people perform with so much passion." “I thought it was a great experience. I got to meet some fantastic people, exchange cultures with them and create some amazing music! If I had the chance I would definitely do it all again.” -Feedback from Gordano School students ...
